You don't have to be a lawyer to understand this situation....

I just learned about a case of segregation-era oppression happening today in Jena, Louisiana. I signed onto ColorOfChange.org's campaign for justice in Jena, and wanted to invite you to do the same.

http://www.colorofchange.org/jena/?id=2297-446682

Last fall in Jena, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the "white tree" on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a "prank," more Black students sat under the tree in protest. The District Attorney then came to the school accompanied by the town's police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, "I can be your best friend or your worst enemy... I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen."

A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

It's a story that reads like one from the Jim Crow era, when judges, lawyers and all-white juries used the justice system to keep blacks in "their place." But it's happening today. The families of these young men are fighting back, but the story has gotten minimal press. Together, we can make sure their story is told and that the Governor of Louisiana intervenes and provides justice for the Jena 6. It starts now. Please join me:

http://www.colorofchange.org/jena/?id=2297-446682

The noose-hanging incident and the DA's visit to the school set the stage for everything that followed. Racial tension escalated over the next couple of months, and on November 30, the main academic building of Jena High School was burned down in an unsolved fire. Later the same weekend, a black student was beaten up by white students at a party. The next day, black students at a convenience store were threatened by a young white man with a shotgun. They wrestled the gun from him and ran away. While no charges were filed against the white man, the students were later arrested for the theft of the gun.

That Monday at school, a white student, who had been a vocal supporter of the students who hung the nooses, taunted the black student who was beaten up at the off-campus party and allegedly called several black students "nigger." After lunch, he was knocked down, punched and kicked by black students. He was taken to the hospital, but was released and was well enough to go to a social event that evening.

Six Black Jena High students, Robert Bailey (17), Theo Shaw (17), Carwin Jones (18), Bryant Purvis (17), Mychal Bell (16) and an unidentified minor, were expelled from school, arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder. The first trial ended last month, and Mychal Bell, who has been in prison since December, was convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery (both felonies) by an all-white jury in a trial where his public defender called no witnesses. During his trial, Mychal's parents were ordered not to speak to the media and the court prohibited protests from taking place near the courtroom or where the judge could see them.

Mychal is scheduled to be sentenced on July 31st, and could go to jail for 22 years. Theo Shaw's trial is next. He will finally make bail this week.

The Jena Six are lucky to have parents and loved ones who are fighting tooth and nail to free them. They have been threatened but they are standing strong. We know that if the families have to go it alone, their sons will be a long time coming home. But if we act now, we can make a difference.

Join me in demanding that Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco get involved to make sure that justice is served for Mychal Bell, and that DA Reed Walters drop the charges against the 5 boys who have not yet gone to trial.

http://www.colorofchange.org/jena/?id=2297-446682

Thanks.
God Bless You

Vegans, Vegetarians and Organic Stuff

Surely you have heard of people who call themselves vegetarians while chewing on a piece of red snapper. Truth is vegetarians don’t eat any animal products besides dairy and eggs; the so-called vegetarians who consume fish and seafood actually don’t belong in that group, even when most of the times they avoid eating cadavers. To set the record straight we researched that: Vegans avoid all animal products while vegetarians are allowed to consume lactose and eggs, hence the denominations of lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian and lacto-ovo-vegetarian.

So next time you come across a person who calls themselves a vegetarian, make sure they are strict about their eating habits and beliefs; don’t accept fake vegetarianism as a category, that is, people who eat healthy most days but sporadically devour a plate of Steak Tartar. Still, individuals who refuse meat and poultry but eat fish/seafood can’t be labeled as vegetarians; perhaps omnivorous is the right word for them.

Now, Vegetarian doesn’t mean Organic, although they go well hand-in-hand. You see labels of ‘organic’ everywhere nowadays, and here’s what that means according to the Berkeley Wellness Health Letter:

Foods that carry the green "USDA Organic" seal have been grown and processed according to strict criteria, as verified by private or state organizations. The use of most conventional pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, and sewage sludge is prohibited. Animals are raised on 100% organic feed and are not given antibiotics or growth hormones. If they get sick and need antibiotics, they are removed from the other animals and not sold as organic. (No meat or dairy products of any kind are legally allowed to contain detectable antibiotic residues, however). The animals must also have access to the outdoors, though in factory farms (a growing trend in the organic industry) they may never actually go outside or spend much time in pasture. A new proposal by the National Organic Standards Board aims to close this loophole for dairy cows, by specifying how much time they must spend in pasture eating grass, as opposed to eating grains in feedlots.

The best reason why to buy organic is because it’s better for the environment. Conventional farming erodes and exhausts the soil while generating pollution of land, water, and air. On the other hand, organic farming uses animal manure, crop rotations, beneficial insects, and other techniques to develop a sustainable agricultural system which conserves soil quality, plant biodiversity, water, and utilizes a lot less fossil fuel (non-renewable source of energy).

Try some organic wine and taste the difference!
Popular English Chef, Jamie Kennedy, picked his four favorite organic wines:
Barbera del Moferrato Minola 2001, Nuova Cappelleta, Piedmont, Italy;
Nativa Cabernet Sauvignon 2001, Vena Carmen, Maipo, Chile;
Albet i Noyal Xarello Classic 2004, Penedes, Spain;
Soave Borgoletto 2003, Fasoli Gino, Veneto, Italy

The last time I ate animals was circa 1993 and to be honest it's no sacrifice. Some people often claim that I don't know what I'm missing by not eating sushi; I believe that if even the smell bothers me, I don't think the taste will be any different.
What I couldn't give up eating, ever: bread and cheese....
pizza anyone?

meditation time

This is not plagiarizing.... This is me doing you a favor; I wrote down my favorite quotes from one of the most enlightening books I've read: THE NEW EARTH – By Eckhard Tolle.
I warn you: It's deep stuff, -life changing- deep stuff. ENJOY IT and SPREAD IT!

Driven by greed, ignorant of their connectedness to the whole, humans persist in behavior that, if continued unchecked, can only result in their own destruction.

I didn’t realize yet that thinking without awareness is the main dilemma of human existence.

Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at this moment.

The ultimate truth of who you are is not I Am This or I Am That, but I Am.

Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and ego cannot coexist.

A long-standing resentment is called a grievance…a strong negative emotion connected to an event in the sometimes-distant past that is being kept alive by compulsive thinking.

All religions are equally false and equally true, depending on how you use them.

When you don’t play roles, it means there is no self (ego) in what you do…you are totally focused on the situation. You become one with it…you are the most powerful, most effective, when you are completely yourself. But don’t try to be yourself. That’s another role.

Don’t be concerned with how others define you. When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it’s their problem.

Cleverness divides, intelligence includes.

The ego doesn’t know that your only opportunity for being at peace is now.

Peace, after all, is the end of the ego.

To create suffering without recognizing it –this is the essence of unconscious living; this is totally in the grip of the ego.

It comes as no surprise that those people who work without ego are extraordinarily successful at what they do. Anybody who is one with what he or she does is building the new earth.

Many people are truly their own worst enemy.

Alienation means you don’t feel at ease in any situation, any place, or with any person, not even with yourself. You are always trying to get ‘home’ but never feel at home.

An emotion that does harm to the body also infects the people you come into contact with and indirectly, through a process of chain reaction, countless others you never meet.
There is not good without bad, no high without low.

Ego-generated emotions are derived from the mind’s identification with external factors, which are, of course, all unstable and liable to change at any moment.

Because of the human tendency to perpetuate old emotion, almost everyone carries in his or her energy field an accumulation of old emotional pain, which I call ‘the pain-body’.

Some couples who may think they have fallen in love are actually feeling drawn to each other because their respective pain-bodies complement each other.

There is only one perpetrator of evil on the planet; human unconsciousness.

When you can’t stand the endless cycle of suffering anymore, you begin to awaken.

Someone with a heavy pain-body easily finds reasons for being upset, angry, hurt, sad, or fearful.

Pain-body and ego are close relatives.

Accepting means you allow yourself to feel whatever it is you are feeling at that moment.

Knowing yourself deeply has nothing to do with whatever ideas are floating around in your mind. Knowing yourself is to be rooted in being, instead of lost in your mind.

Acknowledging the good that is already in your life is the foundation for abundance…The fact is: whatever you think the world is withholding from you, you are withholding from the world.

Knowing yourself is being yourself, and being yourself is ceasing to identify with content.

Being aware of your breathing takes attention away from thinking and creates space.

Most people are so distracted by their thoughts, so identified with the voices in their heads, they can no longer feel the aliveness with them.

Some changes may look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.

Not what you do, but how you do what you do determines whether you are fulfilling your destiny.

Stress always diminishes both the quality and effectiveness of what you do under its influence.

Don't Linger in Anger

My Perspective on Driving in South Florida
By Isa Traverso

Since it’s healthy to release because it provides healing and mental calm, it can prevent cancer and a heart attack too, I will do so now; forgive me if these words offend you, my intention is only to make you reconsider your actions on the road.

I’m not the type of person who is constantly mad, not even often; in fact, I tend to smile way too much, but there is one thing that makes my blood rise, my heart pump and my mouth disclose the most shocking words in the dictionary: unconscious drivers.

I am not addressing the 16-year old speeders and trendy noise polluters although I dislike them too, I’m talking about those who have a sports car and go slower than me, who don’t own a sports car.
I’m talking about going 60 miles per hour on the fast lane, when you can go a bit faster.
I’m talking about being the first car and having a bunch behind and either being blind not realizing you’re slowing everyone else, or being a dumb-ass and doing it on purpose because of selfishness. The “go over me” signal does not work for me, so if I pass you really close, almost touching your vehicle with mine, don’t say I didn’t warn you by tail gaiting or flashing my lights at you.

If you’re one of those who drive a Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Audi or even a Porsche, and are going slower than I, then I get pissed off. At least have the decency to acknowledge that I’m behind you, forcing my car into yours and move out of my way.

Between those who pretend to be driving a sports car and the 80-something cadavers who succeed in exasperating me daily, I don’t know whom I would chose first to boycott from the South Florida roads.

Yes, I am in a hurry to get somewhere, otherwise, why would I be driving in the first place?

Yes, I get annoyed and will flip a bird at you if you see me tailgating and do not move. I don’t mean to offend you; I just need to be in front of you.

No, I’m not afraid of dying, getting into an accident or killing someone; I am only reckless driving when people don’t realize that for 3 whole minutes I’ve been trying to get ahead and they don’t move.

No, I will not cease to believe that I’m absolutely right and an awesome driver, while the crazy ones are out there, running red lights, with their phones glued to their ears, putting make up on, or passing lanes without paying attention to the blind-spot.

And don’t get me started with the people who use their brake more than they should…The ones who brake constantly on a highway, just because their phone rang, they saw a cop, or because there’s someone braking miles away. Also, if you almost missed your exit while on the highway, don’t put everyone else in danger by crossing lanes restlessly to make it safely to your destination, just get off at the next one and turn around, don’t you realize it’s a safety hazard?

Am I angry? Not really, this is just a release before I get angry, as I said, I don’t often get angry, just when I’m driving, and right now, I’m writing, not in the car; because that would be absolutely irresponsible…just like most people driving out there, in the South Florida roads.

Avoid getting me angry and tense, please.

Old people: get someone to drive you, get a chauffeur for your errands, demand for the government to provide you FREE transportation; at 79+ you shouldn’t be cruising the same streets I am, your reflexes are not as trustworthy. I fear for your life, and mine. Yes, I’ve seen you run red lights on various occasions, and I also see how you can’t control the wheel accurately and end up changing lanes without looking. I'm a witness, I live in Boca.

Sports-men wannabe: why spend more than the necessary amount of money for a decent car? Donate some, save some, take a trip; but don’t spend the dough on a car you are not fit to drive, and the law won’t allow it either, so while you are living in the U.S. of A (Thanks Borat), get a comfy one, not a fast one; save it for your trip to Germany or Italy. If you are the kind who can’t live without showing off your sports vehicle, at least stay on the slower lane if you are too afraid to hit the gas, but please, I ask you kindly, don’t block my momentum.

If you’re driving around that nice part of town called Little Haiti, beware of cars stopping in the middle of the road for no apparent reason and beware of those who cross the street where they shouldn’t.

It's an adventure to drive around Miami, and thanks to the awful traffic, it is permanently on my black list. So dear friends, don't invite me to Miami, unless it's really necessary.

Thanks and I do love you.

all over the place...

Pero en lo demas, I LIKE IT...

GRACIAS KIKE!

Next week: OFF TO NEW YORK.
Remember to say thank you.
CHAU.

nuevo capitulo

And so it happened...Changes happen.
My editor job in the magazine formerly known as Distrikt expired. It never took off, so I (pardon the redundancy) took off. It was an experience though.
Like Carolina says: NEEEEXT! And next it is...

The Omar Vizquel project/HOMEPLATE MOVIE is flowing nicely. The script rocks! Because I wrote it. My coffee table book (DE LOS ANDES TO JERUSALEM) with photographs by Abraham Hammer is also under the process of being created thanks to CARLA LEI and ADRIANA ROMERO. If you want to invest in printing the 3,000 copies, inquire within....If you want to purchase advance copies, send an email.
WHAT AM I DOING NOW?
I'm taking it one step at a time. Focusing on enlightening those who want to buy a dog, by pressuring them to ADOPT. I'm also working as a freelance writer (duh), P.R Specialist (Charging 10% finder's fee if I find a job/gig for you) and... I'm offering CHEAP photo services, check it out: http://isatraverso.com/Fotografia.Photography2.mov
WHAT IS NEW?
The fact that I really like that Regina Spektor song Fidelity, and the band Blue October, that the ROGER WATERS concert was amazing (THANKS RITU FROM SOUTH FLORIDA FAIR), That our restaurant Biarritz Bistro in Caracas is serving delicious food (but that's not new really). That those Crunch dark chocolate sticks are addictive. That the Orange Dream Machine in Jamba Juice tastes like Crema Real... And there's always something new... I'll try to keep you posted.
Most importantly... there's a NEW reel for the documentary TRUST 22... In which I appear (fat) but happy. Check it out and buy it at: http://www.trust22.com
THANKS FOR READING, LEAVE A COMMENT. GO GRATITUDE!

Gracias GIN.

Free Tickets to Peaceful Warrior

Everyone? Exciting news!

Tomorrow, Peaceful Warrior is opening nationwide.

There's an awesome story behind this release, but more on that later. :) The important thing is that we're inviting you to see it--for free--this weekend.

All you need to do is visit this link, collect the tickets (you can get a bunch for you and your friends), and bring them to the theater of your choice. (they’ve already given away 900,000+ and it’s time for you to grab yours!)

And then come back and we'll tell you about the rest. ;)

Ready? Great.

Remember when the movie version of Dan Millman's book, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior first came out last year? It had a successful limited release, but then went 'underground.' Incredibly, though, Universal Pictures opted to revive it--something that's happened only twice before in the history of Hollywood production.

That itself is pretty cool, but there's something even more unique about the story of the film.

Universal understood that Dan's message couldn't really be captured in a quick trailer or through a slick advertising campaign, and so, instead of using up their marketing budget on promotional billboards, they decided to spend it on the audience instead... spreading the message by giving the movie away.

If that's not conscious capitalism in action, we don't know what is. ;)

So go on! Collect your tickets! (If you've not heard of the film, you're in for a treat--Peaceful Warrior is the semi-autobiographical story of Dan Millman's extraordinary experience with an unlikely spiritual mentor... and it's seriously inspirational.) Then check out the Zaadz Peaceful Warrior pod, or put out the word to other Zaadzsters in your area to meet up for a screening. It's the perfect opportunity to get to know each other. Zaadzsters rock--if we do say so ourselves.

In service, enthusiasm, and love...

The Zaadz Team.
